The Quest For Aerodynamics

While the beloved S30Z may look sleek and slippery, it actually has horrible aerodynamics. The front end of the car is prone to lift and the rear creates turbulent pockets of air. To fight these characteristics, everyone from Nissan itself to aftermarket tuners and DIY backyard mechanics have tried chin spoilers, bumper replacements, spoilers and underbody diffusers. Some however, are definitely more interesting that others.

A factory effort from Nissan featuring an interesting front end.  The gaping mouth has channels that directs one stream of air to the radiator and another stream to the intake.  The hood is also vented to help with underhood temperatures.

Another factory backed car sporting the same bumper, but this time swapping the hood vents in favor of a ducted chin spoiler.

The Checkman and Hitachi sponsored Z, with a G-nose and an interesting spoiler and fin combo.  Reminds me of Detroit land yachts from the 50’s!

And the most extreme of the bunch.  The Challege Z.  Just like the Checkman/Hitachi Z, this one sports the G-nose, but with a radically chopped roofline.  Sick…

One more shot of it at speeds.

I like these pics. I have been looking for the first 2 in a larger size for a long time.
